What I thought might be happening is that passive-aggressive might have been at the end of a line and automatic hyphenation was taking place.

That leaves with a couple of thoughts, but not really sure how any of them play out. All of the "normal" hyphens appeared to be supported by all the fonts, so that's probably not it. I changed fonts and sometimes the Armenian Hyphen would show, so it may be font-based.

The Armenian Hypen, Mongolian Todo Soft Hyphen, Hyphen with Diaeresis, two-em dash, three-em dash, and double-hyphen did not display correctly in Google Docs using the Arial font. I even went to Unicode Characters in the 'Punctuation, Dash' Category and copy/pasted the entire table into Google Docs. I tried creating the document in Word and importing it into Google Docs and it appears correctly. I even went into WordPerfect and created a soft-hyphen that allows word breaking and a hard-dash that doesn't and they all came out correctly. The figure-dash (U+2012), en-dash (U+2013), em-dash (U+2014), and the regular dash (U+002D) from the keyboard all came out intact and correctly looking. The hyphen (U+2010) and the non-breaking-hyphen (U+2011) came out with an extra space as part of the hyphen. In Google Docs, you can go to Insert > Special Characters > Punctuation > Dash/Connector and find several. Unfortunately, asking the students to go insert a special hyphen every time isn't are several dashes that are possible. I would definitely file a ticket with Canvas.īy the way, it's stripping the hyphen that you get when you type from the keyboard, it's not stripping the Unicode versions that I ran in my tests. That suggest the problem is with the preview or conversion and not the actual upload.

Steps 1-4 were on an iPad, steps 4-7 were on a PC. Seriously? Why would I even think to swipe to move to something else? I don't know those three dots mean something.

Here's another place where someone had issues submitting assignments through the app that wasn't happening through the browser: Re: Does the app strip metadata from pictures submitted in helped me do some testing with the iPad as I couldn't figure out how to move past the "import from camera" screen that came up. Work differently on the app, so it very may well be that something there is stripping out the hyphens without Canvas being aware of it.
